Becoming a Pattern Designer

Episode 1: Web Presence

Disclaimer: Ok Ok. What the heck do I know about Pattern Design? Hopefully a lot at this point. I’ve been fully immersed in the space for 5 years, have been licensing my work for just as long and have a best selling design on a POD powerhouse website. But even with all of my experience, I’m growing and learning every day in the space. Can I improve on several different fronts? Absolutely. But hopefully what I’ve learned so far can help the next designer. Either way, I’ll be writing this series monthly for the foreseeable future.

1. Create a Website

Start by building a website on a user-friendly platform like Squarespace, which offers templates specifically designed for creative businesses, so you can easily showcase your portfolio, blog posts, and contact information. Squarespace also offers artist friendly portfolio templates. Plus, they have built-in tools to help optimize your site for search engine. (SEO I hear is very important though I don’t quite have a tight grasp on it yet).

2. Buy Your Own Domain Name

Invest in your own domain website name (e.g., yourname.com). It’s affordable and helps solidify your online presence. Most website builders offer domain registration, or you can buy one through sites like GoDaddy or Google Domains. Side note- platform hosting sites often offer this as an option.

3. Create a Professional Email Address

Ditch the Gmail and go for an email address that matches your domain. For example, “hello@yourname.com” looks much more polished than “yourname@gmail.com.” Not only does this make you appear more professional, but it also helps build trust with potential clients.

4. Photography

First impressions matter, and high-quality photos of yourself and your work can make all the difference. Hire a brand photographer to capture you in action, whether it’s at your studio, working with your designs, or styling your products. These professional photos will level up your website, social media, and even marketing materials.

If you can’t afford to hire anyone just yet, ask your most photography skilled friend to capture some pictures of you. Iphone cameras these days are well equipped to take some really great shots! Do a quick Youtube search to find out all the camera tips and tricks.

5. Keep It Simple and Easy to Navigate

Your website should be easy to navigate, with clear sections for your portfolio, blog, about me, and contact info. A clutter-free, well-organized site encourages visitors to explore your work and stay longer. Plus, make sure it’s mobile-friendly—most visitors are browsing from their phones! Most webhosting platforms offer phone friendly templates for your websites.

6. Use SEO to Help People Find You

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) might sound technical, but it’s key to getting your website noticed. Be sure to use keywords in your page titles, meta descriptions, and blog content that relate to your work (like “surface pattern designer” or “creative business”). Most website platforms, like Squarespace and WordPress, have built-in SEO tools to help you with this— because you will need help. This is a world I need to fully dive into, so stay tuned— maybe I will in 2025 :)

7. Add a Blog or News Section

A blog is a great way to drive traffic to your site and keep your audience updated on your latest projects, ideas, and collaborations. Share behind-the-scenes stories, tips, or personal insights to engage your audience and help them connect with your brand.

By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to creating a web presence! I guess that’s all I have for now. Stay tuned for more tips, tricks and random musings on becoming a freelance pattern designer!
